I was sitting at Starbucks a couple days ago when God gave me a gift.
I was reading the final chapters of Hudson Taylor’s Spiritual Secrets, drinking my drip coffee and spending some time praying for the upcoming CSUN IV staff retreat when a little black girl, probably about 20 months, came up to me and handed me a book titled The Anointing. I thought it was cute and so I thanked her as she ran back to her parents. I then called her over and attempted to giver her the book back, but she wouldn’t take it.
Her parents walked over and and her dad told me, “I felt like I’m supposed to give you this book. God told me to give it to you.” I was a little shocked. He continued, “I didn’t know if I was supposed to, so I asked God to give me a sign, and when I did that, you got up and moved tables.” He went on to tell me how the book has blessed him and said that he wanted me to have it.
I thanked him for the book. When he left, I perused through it and read the back cover. Two blurbs stood out to me:
- “Do you have a fear of being a ‘has-been’?
- “God wants to give His anointing to everyone. But have you stepped into your fullness and potential? Don’t let your past ruin what God has for you today.”
Those two questions that the back-cover poses have been recurring themes in my prayers and reflections, especially as I prepare for the new school year at Northridge. I struggle with the fear of being a ‘has-been’ and I’m often praying for freedom from allowing past mistakes, experiences, and hurts, ruin what God has for me.
When the family left, they did not invite me to church or try to get my contact information. It was simply a gift from God to me at Starbucks. I may never see them again, but I am grateful for the way God used them to speak to me and initiate with me.
