What is it: A $10 billion to fund repairs and construction of school facilities (K-12 + Higher Education)
What the Pro people are saying: The pro people are pointing out the dire need for money to (re)build our education system in California. We desperately need new schools and upgrades to current facilities to meet the growing demand of our educational services.
What the Con people are saying: This bond is not just free money to our local school. Local districts have to match the money they apply for through local bond measures. Most of the argument lies on the potential (and historical) wastefulness of bonds.
Bottom Line: Though not a fan of bonds, I’m a fan of education and see firsthand (through my wife) the ways that education is under-funded. (My wife teaches in a trailer because there are not enough classrooms to accomodate the kids) Across the country, school bond measures usually have a hard time passing. With the cap on property taxes, the education system (perhaps unfortunately) relies on bond measures to provide funding. While this may not be the perfect solution, there aren’t many people who are offering alternative solutions.
