What is it: One of the more controversial initiatives, this proposition would require parental notification for minors who choose to have an abortion. This proposition would become law through an amendment to the state’s constitution.
What the Pro people are saying: Minors can’t get aspirin at school without parental notification, yet the law allows them to get surgery (abortion) without the consent of a parent.
What the Con people are saying: For many minors who have an unwanted pregnancy, it could be very difficult to notify their parents. If there is potential for abuse at home, minors may pursue aborting the child outside of a safe clinic. Furthermore, this proposition is just a front for people who want to ban abortion.
Bottom Line: Apart from my beliefs regarding abortion, it makes sense to me that I should be notified if my daughter is ever in that position. Parents have the responsibility to advise and guide their children, especially through some of the more difficult decision-making processes. I like that this initiative has a provision for children who are in an abusive situation where parental notification could put the youth in danger. However, I’m not sure if I like that this law would be enacted through a constitutional amendment.

It’s interesting that the pro and con arguments take such different perspectives. In all of the parental notification discussions, I think it is a no-brainer. You can’t operate on a kid without their parents knowing. Cases of abuse at home are the exception, not the rule, and should be treated as such.
