Tune in??? Tyler, we're going to the game!

Just read in the LA Times that the LA Galaxy's budget for its players is $1.9 million (Salary cap in the MLS), but last year they passed a rule for each team to be able to blow past the salary cap on one player (They called it the Beckham rule!). They are going to pay Beckham 25 times what the entire team is worth!

I'm intrigued. I'm not that impressed, especially considering the money. This move will garner interest in MLS, but it will be short-lived unless MLS can pull more premiere players from Europe. Getting an aging player past his prime won't fill meet this need. Of course the money given to the aging player may be attractive to those who are in better shape. (Yeesh, this "aging" player is only four years older than me.) The initial signing of Freddy Adu looked great, but it hasn't worked out all that well and now he's talking about going to Europe anyway. Landon Donovan staying in the US also helped raise the level of play, but he's not that charismatic and one player in a team sport will have a hard time garnering lasting interest overall. They're not like Tiger Woods playing an individual sport. Each time you turn on a major golf tournament, you can watch woods. Each time you turn on an MLS game you won't always get to watch Beckham.

All that said, I'll probably tune in to see Beckham pass to Donovan.

Yup, he's got a great kick and that's about it... Maybe he has influence and leadership on his team, though he just got dropped by the British coach from the England team. The Galaxy paid a lot of money for the name. Regardless, you must be impressed and seem to like him more than I do :)

His passing and free kicks are some of the best in the world even though he's not all that fast. I also admired his leadership during the World Cup despite the fact England underachieved.

Probably... Though I meant to say he's a mediocre player all-around.

I agree that he's past his prime, but a mediocre player for Real Madrid is probably a star in MLS.
