Psalm 1.3: True Prosperity

Thanks for visiting my blog, Serving Bread. Here you'll read stories, insights, reflections and ramblings from a campus minister, father, husband and Jesus-follower. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to the RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

3 [The righteous] are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper.

During a short exercise of meditating on God’s word that my colleague, Ruth, was teaching to our students, I was struck by verse 3 of Psalm 1. This Psalm is probably in the top five of my favorite scripture passages, so I am familiar with it. On Monday night, God highlighted a few things out of this passage that spoke directly to my soul. The word ‘prosper’ especially caught my attention.

There are many ways to define the word prosper–most of it has to do with some sort of financial gain. For example, if you were to visit prosper.com, you would find an innovative website that connects lenders and borrowers. I’m sure some people would have no problem linking financial prosperity to Christian maturity. That’s not how I read scripture or this passage. However, using the picture of financial prosperity as a sort of metaphor for our intimacy with God may be the intent of the author. Continue reading ‘Psalm 1.3: True Prosperity’

10. Audacity

This is the beginning of a countdown of my ten favorite freeware applications that I use frequently. I have a PC with Windows XP, so I’m not sure whether they work for a Mac or for other version of windows.

It baffles my mind that a piece of software like Audacity is free. This is fantastic software for audio editing. I’m not a musician, so I don’t know what the needs of a musician would be (and whether Audacity can handle those needs), but for an amateur who is looking to splice and edit various songs and sounds, this software makes it simple and keeps it at great quality. I have used it to speed up lectures (the guy would sound like a chipmunk, but I can hear the lecture at a much faster rate), and to edit space in between songs (I did that with the Live 8 concert a couple summers ago that I recorded off of MTV/VH1).

audacity 2 Audacity

This freeware does a lot more than for what I have used. If you have any sort of audio editing needs, Audacity is a fantastic program to use.

This is how we bond

WiiWe have had the Nintendo Wii for two weeks now, and I can’t complain with the number of hours we have logged playing with this game system. We only have one game–the sports pack–and we’re not sure we’ll be buying any other games anytime soon. I love being a part of the game and love how much Rhoda and I play together and against each other.

The last game system I owned was a used Nintendo Game System (and a used Atari system before that). At first, it was a little weird for a couple of 30-somethings to own this system (let alone to stand in line at Target to pick up the toy), but after I realized that 30 is the new 20, I got over it quickly!

So friends, come over and play with us!

My first $0.50

I wouldn’t quite call it a side business. For birthday and Christmas, my family (immediate and extended) got me the Canon Rebel Xti. Photography has been a hobby of mine for years, but when I got to college, I could no longer afford film and developing costs, and any access to darkrooms. In the past year, Rhoda has been encouraging me to take up this hobby again (which is why she orchestrated this great gift). I’ve been shooting around for the past couple of months and uploading my shots both to this site (in lower quality) and to an amateur/professional photography site (Dreamstime).

Today, someone downloaded one of my pictures and my account got credited $0.50. Now this is hardly the supplemental income (and I have to wait until it gets to $100 before I can actually get the money), but it is encouraging that there is someone out there who liked it enough to download it!

Two less hours

Layla I love the time I get to spend with Layla. While integrating family and ministry has been an art-form that I have yet to perfect, one of the God-sents of this age are the naps. A nap is a beautiful thing–the toddler needs it and the parent needs it. During those two hours I have held meetings, cleaned my office, prayed, and played games. The nap was a beautiful gift. At nearly 18 months, Layla is not ready to drop a nap, but she thinks she is. In the past two weeks, she has gone about 3 days without napping. That means a loss of two hours of “Eddy time”.

Add another rule to the rules of life: When you figure out how to make life work, the circumstances change and you’re back to square 1.

The Cal State Northridge Men’s Basketball team plays host to UC Davis tonight. Who do I root for? (My alma mater or my mission field?) May the best team win–I will be celebrating Valentine’s Day without either of those two teams! (I tried to make the game a part of the date, but got ‘the look’ in response)

Independent Local Convention, Day 3: Serving the Greater Good

Is my time worth $55?

We’re in the process of refinancing, and our broker wanted us to fax back the signed “disclosures”. These are 50 pages of legal mumbo-jumbo. (For example, I had to sign a statement that says that these records are technically public and through the PATRIOT Act, they can be available to government agencies). We have an old-school fax machine, which I know would have taken me well over an hour to send it over. So I just went to a local shipping store that offers fax services. I thought it would cost me something like $10. It turns out, they charge $1/page. I didn’t figure this out (I didn’t think of asking) until about half-way through (it would have been cheaper to send it overnight). I honestly did not think it would be that much. Now I know! Of course, I could not pay $55 for all that, so with a little charm, he gave me a 25% discount.

Lesson #1: Just because it’s not worth a $1/page to you, doesn’t mean it’s not $1/page.
Lesson #2: How much is my time really worth? I would have enjoyed saving that $37 for Starbucks!
Lesson #3: A little charm goes a long way–saved me almost $20!

Salvation from boredom

What is the dominant mode of experience at the end of the twentieth century? How do people see things, and how do they expect to see things? The answer is simple. In every field, from business to politics to marketing to education, the dominant mode is entertainment… In other centuries human beings wanted to be saved, or improved, or freed, or educated. But in our century, they want to be entertained. The great fear is not of disease or death, but of boredom.

Global warming, global shwarming

Everywhere I turn, I hear someone talking about global warming. The networks have “experts” to talk about how the earth is getting warmer and unless we change some things drastically (some would argue that means the Bush administration), we might as well start writing our epitaphs.

Apart from the Bush Administration (which in recent weeks has changed its tone), no one really challenges global warming. It has become a scientific fact that the earth is getting warmer (after all, Al Gore reminded us of that in his hit movie). Oh, and that’s not a good thing. Now, I’m not a scientist, but living in the Valley of Los Angeles, I am a living testimony that it’s getting hotter (it was 87 degrees yesterday–in the middle of winter). Even the likes of Pat Robertson have joined this new craze, saying he is convinced of global warming because last summer was a little hot for his liking.
