Global warming, global shwarming

Thanks for visiting my blog, Serving Bread. Here you'll read stories, insights, reflections and ramblings from a campus minister, father, husband and Jesus-follower. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to the RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Everywhere I turn, I hear someone talking about global warming. The networks have “experts” to talk about how the earth is getting warmer and unless we change some things drastically (some would argue that means the Bush administration), we might as well start writing our epitaphs.

Apart from the Bush Administration (which in recent weeks has changed its tone), no one really challenges global warming. It has become a scientific fact that the earth is getting warmer (after all, Al Gore reminded us of that in his hit movie). Oh, and that’s not a good thing. Now, I’m not a scientist, but living in the Valley of Los Angeles, I am a living testimony that it’s getting hotter (it was 87 degrees yesterday–in the middle of winter). Even the likes of Pat Robertson have joined this new craze, saying he is convinced of global warming because last summer was a little hot for his liking.

Just to put all this into perspective, thirty years ago, scientists were sounding the alarm of the ice age. That’s right, within a couple hundred years, the earth was going to freeze over, and we are going to die. Temperatures all over the world were getting colder and colder. It was a terrible time to be a concerned citizen. But that craze ended quickly–after all, more scientists were moving to the San Fernando Valley and realizing that the problem is not an ice age, but a warm age.

But until about 15 years ago, we were still concerned with the coming ice age. Freezing over is pretty much not an issue anymore. What has happened in the last 15 years to send us from one extreme to another? Maybe our science is better. Maybe we are aware of more variables that cause environmental disasters. Maybe we have smarter scientists. I’m a skeptic in all those areas.

I am sold on the fact that we are causing chaos in our environment. I am sold that we are not good stewards of creation. I am sold that we (humans and our propensity toward sin) are responsible for environmental disasters (both current and impending). I am sold that we need to keep companies and communities accountable to environmental stewardship standards. If doing all those things prevents a disaster (whether it is an ice age or a warmer planet, I’ll let the scientists figure that out), then that’s good enough for me.
