How do I buy a new computer?

My Dell laptop is on it’s last leg. I am running out of space on my hard drive, the battery life is pretty much non-existent, my ethernet adapter is no longer working, and this past week my graphics card went bust. After three and a half years, I am a bit disappointed, particularly since I had a value to have this computer for five years, but not sure it’s going to last that long.

Macbook Macbook Pro

I am thinking of purchasing a Mac—especially that I can now run Microsoft Windows simultaneously. So I am now having to consider between two options—the [tag]Macbook[/tag] and the Macbook Pro. It seems to me that the Macbook has pretty much everything I need. For a thousand dollars more, I can purchase the Macbook Pro, but I’m not sure whether the extra grand warrants those extras.

The problem is that I’m the kind of guy who wants to buy the best if I can. On a cognitive level, it makes no sense spending more money for things that I probably don’t need. On an emotional level, I kinda want the best thing out there, especially if it’s going to last me a few years. And, I like how the Macbook Pro looks compared to the Macbook.

All to say, I need either your advice or your prayers…

Hey, Eddy! If you can’t judge something by its looks, what can you judge it by? I say go for the Macbook Pro. But that’s only because I’m not the one spending the actual money :)

I don’t know much about Macs, but I’d say the Macbook since after using a desktop replacement laptop for the past 4 years, I’m partial to smaller, lighter ones . Also, the Macbook Pro has processors while faster, are much more expensive (and may not be worth the added performance gain) as well as a dedicated video card, most likely for gamers. You don’t come off as a gamer to me so probably a Macbook would suit your needs. And I don’t know how customizable Macs are, but if you’re looking for a bigger HD or more RAM, I’d buy it elsewhere and install it myself. As for the ego part of having the best out there, have you seen the latest Mac/PC commercials comparing the two? Apparently, just by owning a Mac you’re better off anyway and can be snobby enough for anyone (however false those ads may be)! Hope this helps.

    Hi Eddy,
I finally got a new MacBook myself this week to use for my job and I love it. Since I only needed to use it for work, I got the standard model that came with just 512 MB RAM, and had them upgrade it to 1 GB for about $50 more. I’m finding that this is the minimum you would want to have, so I’d say the more RAM, the better . I bought mine at this website, http://www.macconnection.com (no sales tax/free shipping)
