The gift of the Internet

There are many things I enjoy about the Internet. But today, I had an experience through the Internet that will remain memorable for the rest of my life!

Over 20 years ago, my family left/fled Beirut, Lebanon. I was days shy of finishing the 4th grade, but aspects of the never-ending civil war had made the situation much too dangerous for my family. We left Beirut, and with it, the life I had known. I never had the chance to say goodbye to friends, teachers, and the city in general.

We left Beirut for the United States, and I call this home now. I remember sitting on the plane in London, realizing for the first time in our journey that I may never return. The United States would force me to learn a new language, a new culture, and build new relationships.

My closest (and perhaps best) friend was a guy in my classes by the name of Abdo. What I remember was simply that he was at all my birthday parties and I was at his birthday parties, and weekends were nearly always spent at each other’s homes.

When you leave a country like Lebanon, you never know if people actually make it? (If you catch my drift) I often wondered what ever happened to him and his family. There were no emails or IMs to stay in touch.

But today, the internet brought us together again. Browsing through Facebook, I discovered someone by the same first name and last name of my friend. I sent him a quick message asking whether we were once friends. This is what I got back in return:

oh my god!! eddy yervant ekmekji…yes thats me….how have u been?…..dude, i still remember being at ur house in beirut, hanging out back when we were in onzieme or something. that must have been over 23 years ago. so u have been in CA all this time?

I came to massachuetts right after I graduated from CPF. Now i live in long island NY. tell me about u man. ur maried now, thats great. we should catch up sometime.

Thank you Facebook!
