Look around you and see

Thanks for visiting my blog, Serving Bread. Here you'll read stories, insights, reflections and ramblings from a campus minister, father, husband and Jesus-follower. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to the RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Jesus exhorts his disciples in John 4.35: “Look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting.” The fields are ripe at Cal State Northridge. To quote my supervisor, God has given us eyes to see the Kingdom made visible.

God is at work on the campus in a new way and I feel like I’m along for the ride of my life.

Highlights from the past month include:

  • Students promoting our community on campus (without staff) at our table
  • Over 150 students who have expressed interest in InterVarsity
  • Over 150 students come to our “Welcome BBQ” — which I dub the most disorganized, God-redeemed thing I’ve ever done
  • Seven young students in the dorms doing follow-up (last year, it was just Ruth–my staff partner–and I)
  • 48 students at our first fellowship meeting of the year (we did not make enough copies of the scripture passages). We maxed at around 26 last year.
  • 21 students joined us for some “spontaneous” fun at hour house after the fellowship meeting.
  • 7 students made either a first-time commitment or an adult-recommitment to follow Jesus. We followed up with each of them and it was a breath of fresh air to hear the stories. (In the six years I have been at CSUN, I have seen 7 total students convert)
  • 8 students joining us for an annual evangelism conference.
  • We had nearly 40 people in Bible Studies this week–34 of whom attended the Dorm Bible Study.
  • Friend are bringing friends who are bringing friends.
  • Two student leaders have stepped up to be in authority and shepherd our community.
  • Twenty-five students at our house for a Labor Day BBQ, who stayed four hours after the “end time”

The academic year is just starting and God is on the move on the campus. Jesus is knitting people together in community and empowering them to be children of God and to be transforming powers on our campus. If you want to read more, check out my staff partner’s blog.

Praise be to God!

“The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children forever, because you have followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly…Now give me this hill country that the LORD promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the LORD helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.”

Eddy, May God continue to bless the spirit of Caleb in your leadership & loyalty at CSUN!!
