Finance Friday 12: The ends do not justify the means

I recently brought out an insurance sponsored electrician to do some work in our patio. After his examination, he tells me that what insurance won’t cover what I need, but if I pay him a little bit, he would write up in a way where insurance would cover it. In other words, he gets his money, my costs are low and the people who get screwed are the insurance people.

That was a no-brainer decision on my part. I thanked him and told him that I would be willing to pay a higher amount rather than engage in insurance fraud.

From time to time I find myself in a situation where the temptation to cheat a little is very real. I recognize that “the rest of the world” might operate in this manner, and “everyone” fudges insurance papers. My convictions and faith operate against the grain of the world. My faith becomes more real when I have to make a decision to pay more money and not engage in insurance fraud. My convictions become stronger when I hold to truth even when no one may find out.

For these electricians, this might be business as usual.  And though I am going to end up paying more money in the end, my convictions are worth a lot more than saving me $100.
